Toni Reece: Welcome to the Get Inspired! Project BOOMERS. I’m Toni Reece, and today I’m with Amy Schoen. Amy, welcome to the Project.
Amy Schoen: Thank you.
Toni: Amy, tell us a little bit about yourself.
Amy: I’m 51 myself, and I am a certified professional life coach. I tend to work with singles who want to attract the right relationships and couples who want to create more fulfilling relationships, so I’m a relationship life coach. I’m also in my second marriage, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old son.
Toni: Amy, thank you for being here. Let’s go into the first question. What does inspiration mean to you?
Amy: Inspiration is really about possibilities for me – ideas, concepts. What inspires me is people that have done things that may have broken through the walls of what was considered acceptable. Obviously, it’s personal for everybody, but inspiration is something that moves you to action.
Toni: Have you experienced that type of inspiration that has moved you into action?
Amy: Yes. I get inspired by people who I see have done great things. I work with coaches myself, and one particular coach really helps people create a business that is sustainable, and also helps coaches to earn income so they can do the work that they really want to be doing, a passive income, or something like that. People who have been successful, and you see them being successful. I actually have an MBA, and I’ve always been interested in the business world, as well as helping people.
I’m inspired in different ways. I’m also inspired by people who are giving of themselves and their time to their community or something like that. I too want to give back to my community and help out. We all need something to push us, because we can get so bogged down by our everyday – to look beyond ourselves and look at something bigger.
Toni: Do you see that inspiration is directly correlated with what you do and how you do it?
Amy: Not necessarily. I think you can be inspired to be a certain way and to be different and maybe see something from a different perspective, and so to open up the way that you see something or are inspired to be courageous, inspired to be just helpful to people. There’s so many ways that inspiration can help you push past the barriers.
I think today we all get bogged down by our everyday. I’m a mom, and I have my own business, and it’s so easy to get bogged down into the little nitty gritty of the day. I think in the coaching world, it really helps you look at the bigger picture and to really say what could be possible.
I know even with my own projects right now, I’m working with singles who want to find marriage partners, and I created the Motivated to Marry brand, and for me, I want people to get inspired. I want people to be okay with saying, “I’m marriage minded.” It’s okay to go out there and try to find others who are marriage minded. I’m trying to work actually on a movement right now to help others. In the dating world today, not everybody wants that; it’s not a goal for everybody, so to help people feel like it’s possible, and that they can achieve the goals that they want to.
Toni: What is your greatest life lesson?
Amy: I’m one of these people who is really about “Don’t give up.” There have been times in my life where I’ve seen obstacles. I once had a clothing store and, “How could this be possible? How could I have this?” To really find your way and take little steps, find people to help you along the way.
If you want something, to focus on it, put your energy in that direction, and you most likely can make it happen. It may not happen right away. It may be in the future, but it can.
I know even with me having my son, it was a five-year journey. I was in my 40s, and there were people saying “You can’t have that.” To find a way to make it possible that I could have that … and I didn’t take a typical route. I’m not going to go into details, but what I’m going to say is it’s really about finding a way and being creative about problem solving and finding people who can help you make your dreams a reality.
Toni: What do you want your legacy to be?
Amy: That’s really a tough one. I think again it has to be around helping people achieve their dreams and helping people get to their goals in their life. What spoke to me and the values that are important to me is I consider one of my top values as being a catalyst for positive change and helping others.
My father unfortunately passed away at a young age. I was at his funeral. He was an attorney, but he was so impactful as an attorney, and what people said about him … when you die at a younger age, you have more people who show up to your funeral. I got to see what his legacy was, how many people he helped, how many families and children, and all these things. I guess similarly, I want people to say, “She really helped me get to where I wanted to go in life. She made it seem possible and helped me with that process.” I do that also not only with my clients, but I think I’m that way with my friends and family.
Toni: Amy, thank you very much for sharing your values and your inspiration around inspiration. It’s been a delight to talk to you. Thank you for being part of the Project.
Amy: Thanks for having me.
Toni: You’re welcome. Take care, Amy.
